It’s finally cooling down in LA, so time to warm up with some pasta.
Modo Mio Sherman Oaks is adding Northern Italian favorites to the Valley dining scene. Fresh linguine, gnocchi and lasagna adorns the menu alongside hearty entrees. Their menu has plenty of meat options but it also caters to vegetarians, so there’s something for everyone.
The pizza selection is minimal with four options: Napoletana, tonno, vegetariana and regina, but you can build a custom pie with a variety of toppings. I decided to go custom: a Margherita pizza topped with anchovies. The briny taste of the anchovies balances well with the sweet mozzarella, fresh tomatoes and fragrant basil. Easily one of my favorite slices!
The pollo alla milanese is as home cooked as it gets. A pounded out, breaded piece of chicken breast fried to golden perfection paired with a simple albeit delicious spaghetti with marinara sauce. It’s simple but great - such a classic dish guaranteed to please.
The scaloppine alla griglia is a veal top round that’s grilled to perfection and topped with rosemary, portobello mushrooms and sautéed onions. It’s served with a side of seasonal vegetables and sautéed potatoes. The tender bites of veal with herbal rosemary vegetables are reminiscent to a meal made by your nonna.
I enjoy eating seafood and pasta and the penne al salmone was delicious. Several large chunks of salmon are tossed in a vodka sauce with fresh tomatoes and mixed in with the fresh made pasta before plating.
Because no meal is complete without dessert - I had to have the tiramisu. Tiramisu is probably the most common dessert that’s available in every Italian restaurant - something I’m truly happy about. There’s something about lady fingers soaked in espresso and Kahlua, layered with mascarpone cream and dusted with shaved chocolate that just fills me with joy.
If you’re looking for a new restaurant for a date, lunch with a friend or dinner with la famiglia, then stop by Modo Mio and enjoy their classic Italian dishes.
