The catch of Hermosa Beach
What’s your New Years resolution? Mine is to continue to explore the vast city of Los Angeles and find all the hidden gems. Like Hermosa Beach: a surf city filled with many resident restaurants and newcomers alike. Just steps away from the beach lies MOSA Coastal. A laidback restaurant with casual vibes; it resembles a house-turned-restaurant structure so it should make you feel right at home. They have an open interior covered in white wood-paneling, geometric tiled floor and bar seating that offers street views and a gorgeous glowing sky at sunset. Their fare visits the sea with a seafood-heavy menu flavored in Mediterranean spices. Their dishes are unique and inventive. Starters include the panini rolls, prosciutto board featuring meats from Niman Ranch, and an heirloom tomato caprese. There is a section dedicated to vegetarian-friendly dishes: a collection of salads and cooked vegetables. The seafood selection goes from ahi tartar, octopus carpaccio, calamari salad, steamed New Zealand clams, steamed salt spring mussels, and their current list of oysters on the half shell. The panini rolls are a must. They’re pull-apart style and served with a marinara dipping sauce. A great choice for a starter. Octopus carpaccio is not something you see everyday - it’s worth a try and a pleasant surprise. Charred eggplants and Moroccan-spiced carrots were two of my favorite dishes. These work well as a shareable appetizer or to pair with your entree as an added side.
Their second course menu explores pastas: shrimp angel hair, spicy rigatoni, pumpkin ravioli, lamb pappardelle; and entrees like Scottish salmon, branzino, Bristol scallops, pork chop Milanese, and chicken marsala. During my visit I dined on the pumpkin ravioli, Scottish salmon and the Bristol scallops. The ravioli were tender pockets filled with spiced autumnal squash in a brown butter sauce. They’re rich and have the familiar flavors of fall. The Scottish salmon was seared, served skin on, and accompanied by crushed fingerling potatoes and salsa verde. The Bristol scallops were seared to perfection with a crisp edge. They’re plated on a bed of puréed celery root dotted with sautéed cherry tomatoes. As someone who enjoys seafood and the unique flavors of the Mediterranean, I truly enjoyed the experience at MOSA Coastal. If you’re looking for beach vibes alongside a great culinary experience, dine with them. Mosa Coastal 190 Hermosa Ave Hermosa Beach, CA 90254
